The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano Performs First Robotic-Assisted Peripheral Intervention in Texas

Patients with peripheral artery disease can now be treated with new technology

PLANO, Texas – The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano* recently completed the first robotic-assisted peripheral intervention in Texas. The procedure has been performed using Corindus Vascular Robotics CorPath System—the first and only Food and Drug Administration-cleared medical device used for robotic-assisted peripheral vascular interventions. These procedures involve placing stents in small arteries in intestines or legs to improve blood flow.

"The ability to now leverage robotic precision in treating patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) is an important addition to our range of treatment options," said John Kedora, MD, vice chairman of vascular surgical services. "Procedure time as well as recovery time are usually reduced when performed robotically, improving the care of our patients." The procedure was done Feb. 13, 2017.

The FDA clearance for the CorPath 200 System in peripheral interventions was based on results from a clinical trial known as RAPID (Robotic-assisted Peripheral Intervention for Peripheral Artery Disease) Study conducted at Medical University Graz in Austria.

Peripheral vascular procedures can be lengthy and lead to a high level of radiation exposure for physicians performing these procedures. The RAPID Study demonstrated that the CorPath 200 System can successfully be used to treat peripheral disease, and previous studies have shown that using the CorPath System will reduce radiation exposure significantly for physicians. The CorPath System demonstrated 100 percent device and clinical success in the study. Additional benefits include greater surgical precision and a minimally invasive surgical approach. The benefits of robotic precision with CorPath 200 are the same in peripheral interventions as they are for coronary interventions.

"We are proud to be the first medical center in Texas to expand our CorPath Vascular Robotic Program into the realm of peripheral intervention," said Mark Valentine, president, The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano. "The expansion of the CorPath System at The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano further emphasizes our commitment to finding advanced treatment options for our patients."
