New Year Brings Cardiovascular Specialty Hospital to Denton County

On Jan. 6, The Heart Hospital Baylor Denton began treating cardiovascular patients at its newly remodeled location, 2801 South Mayhill Road, Denton. Part of Baylor Scott & White Health, the 68,580-square-foot, 16-inpatient bed specialty hospital offers comprehensive cardiac and vascular services. According to the hospital's administrators, all Denton cardiac surgeons are members of the facility's medical staff, and more than 90 percent of area's cardiologists have joined the medical staff of The Heart Hospital Baylor Denton.

"Expanding our brand of five-star services further into North Texas has been a goal of ours," says Mark A. Valentine, president, The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano. "We're pleased to be welcomed by Denton cardiovascular physicians." In 2007, The Heart Hospital Baylor Plano opened as the first and only freestanding, full-service hospital in the Dallas region dedicated solely to heart and vascular health care.  The Plano location is one of the 10 largest cardiothoracic surgery programs in the country, and has earned for the past two years the highest national ranking from The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS) for aortic valve surgery and cardiac bypass surgery. Valentine also serves as president of the new Denton facility.

Services at The Heart Hospital Baylor Denton include:

  • Cardiac catheterization lab
  • Electrophysiology lab
  • Cardiovascular operating suites
  • Hybrid operating suite is used for minimally invasive procedures such as cardiac catheterization and vascular procedures. This suite can be converted to open surgery such as heart bypass surgery.
  • Advanced imaging includes a 256-slice CT scanner, 3D and 2D ultrasound, fluoroscopy, and 1.5T magnetic resonance imaging (MRI)
  • 16-inpatient bed nursing unit to be expanded to 22 beds in May 2014
  • 12-outpatient bed ambulatory surgery unit 
  • Outpatient cardiovascular services through Center for Advanced Cardiovascular Care
  • Comprehensive Wound Center with hyperbaric oxygen therapy
  • Emergency department expanded to 5 beds from 2 beds.
  • The full-service hospital laboratory offers 24/7 services including transfusions.

Leadership at The Heart Hospital Baylor Denton includes Mark Valentine as president; R. Conrad Park, MD, FACC, chief medical officer; Brad Morgan, MBA, vice president of operations; Susan K. Moats, RN, BSN, MBA, vice president of patient care, chief nursing officer; Bryan Nichols, vice president of finance; and Randy Johnson, director of marketing. 

Baylor acquired the facility in May 2013, and quickly began a two-stage renovation project which is scheduled to be completed in May 2014. The second phase of construction will add six more intensive care unit suites and an additional cardiovascular operating room. Ascension Architects Inc., CBRE, and MEDCO Construction comprise the renovation team.
