Baylor Scott & White Health is now offering a new model of primary care with transparent pricing and easy-to-use technology that allows North Texas employers and employees to tailor their healthcare needs.
Baylor Scott & White is piloting the new model in several North Texas clinics this year, with further expansion anticipated in 2020.
The model, called direct primary care, offers predictable and transparent costs, a greater chance of reduced hospitalizations and emergency department visits, improved patient-doctor relationships, better health outcomes and greater patient satisfaction. Employers can control healthcare costs, offer a valuable benefit to employees, and potentially have a more productive workforce.
Under the Baylor Scott & White Health model, employers are able to customize the provider network based on the needs of their employees and health insurance design, then make a fixed contribution toward employees' membership fees. The model is being implemented in collaboration with Accresa, a Dallas-based healthcare technology company that specializes in payments and administration solutions for the growing direct primary care market. The Accresa platform connects employers, employees, and healthcare providers within the framework of an employer-sponsored plan, providing full transparency into pricing and services while delivering the administrative interface and payments mechanisms required by employers to build and manage a direct primary care benefit for employees.
Members in a direct primary care model are charged a monthly membership fee that covers everything from office visits to basic lab tests. While health insurance is needed to cover hospitalizations and other services, one possible benefit is that patients can choose high-deductible plans with lower premiums since their primary-care needs are already covered. Direct primary care can work particularly well for patients with complex medical conditions who need careful monitoring and help coordinating multiple specialists.
Baylor Scott & White's direct primary care will feature several benefits:
- convenient, online scheduling
- one-stop shopping for multiple services
- personalized, patient-centered care
- virtual physician visits
- digital care options through the myBSWHealth app
