WAXAHACHIE, Texas – Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Waxahachie recently received Magnet designation for excellence in nursing services by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program®. The ANCC is the world's largest and most prominent nurses credentialing organization.
Magnet designation is one of the highest levels of recognition a hospital can accomplish. For patients, this means their care is provided by a nursing staff that ranks in the top 7 percent of hospitals in the country.
According to the ANCC, Magnet status is the gold standard of patient care.
"This achievement represents the dedication of our entire team to making care better for Ellis County by delivering an exceptional experience for any patient who comes through our doors," said Will Turner, president, Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Waxahachie.
The rigorous and lengthy application and review demanded widespread participation from hospital leadership and team members. It also included a highly detailed on-site review by ANCC surveyors who are national nursing experts.
"When it comes to nursing, there is no higher honor than Magnet," explains Cindy Murray, MBA, MHA, chief nursing officer, Baylor Scott & White – Waxahachie. "This is something we can all take tremendous pride in, both as a facility and as a System. While this designation recognizes nurses, we realize that it takes every member of our team to achieve these excellent outcomes for our patients. Our team members have demonstrated this commitment to excellence for the benefit of our patients and community. Every patient, every time, every team member."
The Magnet recognition program is the gold standard for nursing excellence and provides consumers with the ultimate benchmark for measuring quality of care. Research demonstrates that the recognition is beneficial to hospitals and patients who receive care at Magnet facilities, resulting in:
- Higher patient satisfaction with nurse communication, availability of help and receipt of discharge information.
- Lower risk of 30-day mortality and lower failure-to-rescue rates.
- Higher job satisfaction among nurses.
- Lower nurse reports of intentions to leave their positions.
"For more than 100 years, our community has come to know and count on the quality care we provide. With this Magnet designation, that care is now recognized by our peers nationally," said Turner.
All units outperformed national benchmarks for select hospital acquired conditions, including catheter-associated urinary tract infections and hospital-acquired pressure injuries (stage 2 and above, as well as device-related).
For patient satisfaction, all units outperformed national benchmarks for:
- Courtesy and respect for inpatient units.
- Courtesy and respect for ambulatory units.
- Responsiveness for ambulatory units.
- Interprofessional groups/stroke committee (reducing door-to-needle times for stroke patients).
- Developing an orthopedic navigation program to enhance outcomes.
- Mentoring of clinical nurses (influence and communication of nurse mentors).
