Baylor Scott & White – Irving Campus Transformation Underway

Renovation and new patient tower construction rolled into major project

IRVING, Texas – Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Irving is transforming its campus with a nearly $150 million, three-year renovation and construction project. The project includes renovating the hospital interior and exterior, adding new technology and constructing a new six-story patient tower.

The expansion project is the first phase of transforming the healthcare experience for Irving and surrounding communities. The two-phase project began in 2017 and will be completed with the patient tower in 2020 .

Clinical areas undergoing updates with new technology and amenities include the gastroenterology (GI) lab, the cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology suites, expanded inpatient dialysis suite, renovated day surgery and women 's services.

The surgical services update will showcase the addition of a second hybrid surgical suite. These suites combine an advanced high-definition imaging system with an up-to-date surgery operating suite, allowing for more minimally invasive surgeries.

The second phase is construction of a six-story patient tower, after relocation of the hospital 's central plant. Seamlessly integrated with Baylor Scott & White – Irving 's main tower, it will have larger patient rooms that incorporate more advanced technology such as smart beds. Three floors will be built for patient care, creating space for 72 new patient beds. The remaining two floors will be reserved for future expansion. This phase will be complete in 2020.

"Our hospital is at a busy crossroads in the Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex. We are proud to be a multifaceted facility with a diverse medical team providing medical services to Irving, Grand Prairie and other areas. We are committed to advancing care for the community as its needs evolve. These changes allow us to do just that, " said Cindy Schamp, president of Baylor Scott & White – Irving.

A planned new entrance drastically will change the hospital 's main lobby into a two-story glass atrium. The exterior awning from the 1960s will be replaced with an architecturally significant entrance visible from Texas State Highway 183, which is being widened and modernized. The existing exterior awning will be demolished in June.

"The goal is to make this entrance more amendable and improve wayfinding, allowing families and patients to easily find their way around our hospital, " said Schamp.

Inside, guests can access a new retail pharmacy, concierge and guest services, and a waiting area for day surgery, dining services, elevators and entranceways to the rest of the hospital.

The hospital, which opened in 1964 as Irving Community Hospital, sits on a 10-acre campus with a medical staff of 627 physicians and 911 employees.  Annual admissions are more than 11,000 patients, excluding outpatient and emergency department visits. Outpatient visits number 31,783 (excluding home care and emergency department visits) and emergency department visits are 71,147.

Three years earlier, Baylor Scott & White – Irving 's emergency department was renovated and expanded. The nearly 50,000-square-foot emergency department includes 55 patient beds, new guest lounges and spacious reception area, dedicated laboratory, pharmacy and 64-slice CT scanner and telemedicine technology for patients experiencing stroke symptoms.
