DALLAS – Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – McKinney recently received Magnet designation for excellence in nursing services by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program®.
The medical center joins the ranks of some of the nation's most prestigious health care organizations including Cleveland Clinic, The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Mayo Clinic and The University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. It is also the seventh hospital in Baylor Scott & White Health –North Texas Division to receive the elite designation.
Magnet designation is one of the highest levels of recognition a hospital can accomplish. For patients, this means their care is provided by a nursing staff that ranks in the top 7 percent of hospitals in the country.
According to the ANCC, Magnet status is the gold standard of patient care.
"Achieving Magnet designation is validation of our relentless pursuit of high-quality patient care," said Melissa Winter, DNP, MSN, RN, NEA-BC, chief nursing officer/chief operating officer, Baylor Scott & White – McKinney. "Notably, this well-deserved accolade could not be achieved without the full support of the entire institution. The ANCC model mirrors our culture of exemplary patient outcomes and the recognition affirms our commitment to our patients."
The Magnet Recognition Program recognizes health care organizations that demonstrate excellence in nursing practice and adherence to national standards for the organization and delivery of nursing services. Applicants undergo a rigorous evaluation that includes extensive interviews and review of nursing services. Research shows there are clear benefits to hospitals that are awarded Magnet status and to the communities they serve:
- Higher patient satisfaction with nurse communication, availability of help and receipt of discharge information;
- Lower risk of 30-day mortality and lower failure to rescue;
- Higher job satisfaction among nurses; and
- Lower nurse reports of intentions to leave position
"Our Magnet journey demonstrates our exceptional dedication to quality patient care," says Linda Tjiong, RN, MSN, DBA, NE-BC, director of education and research, Baylor Scott & White – McKinney. "This designation confirms my long-standing belief that our facility employs the finest individuals within the industry who continue to exemplify a culture of excellence."
