Desiree Sallman gave birth to a premature baby girl, Lizzy, four years ago at Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Centennial. Lizzy, who was born at 28 weeks gestation, spent three months in the hospital"s neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Today she is a happy, healthy little girl.
In honor of Lizzy"s fourth birthday, they returned to Baylor Scott & White – Centennial to visit staff and donate hand-crochet toy octopuses for NICU babies. . The octopuses were crocheted by a family friend.
While in the mother"s placenta, babies often will reach out and play with their umbilical cord. After they are born, it is natural for them to grab at tubes in the NICU. The tentacles of the octopus offer premature babies comfort during a stressful time.
"The team at Baylor Scott & White – Centennial is very special to me," said Desiree Sallman. "I now have a beautiful, healthy girl and I wanted to do something special for the other babies who are in the NICU."
As a Level III facility, Baylor Scott & White – Centennial"s NICU is equipped to care for some of the sickest, tiniest babies. It is staffed with neonatologists on the medical staff, and neonatal nurse practitioners, nurses and other health professionals trained to care for the specific needs of neonatal patients.
