PLANO, Texas – Baylor Scott & White The Heart Hospital – Plano* has earned the highest quality rating in all five surgical categories from The Society of Thoracic Surgeons (STS), placing the hospital’s performance among the top 1% in the nation for cardiac surgery.

“Receiving the distinguished three-out-of-three star rating for patient care and outcomes in five surgical categories from this highly regarded analysis reaffirms our approach to cardiovascular care in Plano,” said Michael Mack, MD, medical director of cardiothoracic surgery for Baylor Scott & White Health and the chairman of Baylor Scott & White The Heart Hospital – Plano Research Center. “Achieving high scores in those categories places our team among the top 1% of cardiac programs in the country.”

“We work passionately each day to deliver the best possible care to our patients, and this analysis by the leading cardiac surgery review is a testament to that dedication,” said Mark Valentine, president, Baylor Scott & White The Heart Hospital – Plano.

The STS three-star rating, one of the most sophisticated and highly regarded measures of quality in healthcare, places Baylor Scott & White Heart – Plano among the most elite for cardiac surgery in the U.S. and Canada. The team received three stars in all five surgical categories:

  • Isolated coronary bypass graft (CABG)
  • Aortic valve replacement surgery (AVR)
  • AVR plus CABG surgery
  • Mitral valve repair/replacement
  • Mitral valve repair/replacement plus CABG

The star rating uses a combination of quality measures for specific procedures performed by an STS Adult Cardiac Surgery Database participant.

“The Society of Thoracic Surgeons congratulates STS National Database participants who have received three-star ratings,” said David M. Shahian, MD, chair of the Task Force on Quality Measurement. “Participation in the database and public reporting demonstrates a commitment to quality improvement in healthcare delivery and helps provide patients and their families with meaningful information to help them make informed decisions about health care.”

The STS National Database was established in 1989 as an initiative for quality improvement and patient safety among cardiothoracic surgeons. The database includes four components: the Adult Cardiac Surgery Database (ACSD), the Congenital Heart Surgery Database (CHSD), the General Thoracic Surgery Database (GTSD), and the mechanically assisted circulatory support database (Intermacs). The STS ACSD houses approximately 6.9 million surgical records and gathers information from more than 3,800 participating physicians, including surgeons and anesthesiologists from more than 90% of groups that perform heart surgery in the U.S. STS public reporting online enables STS ACSD participants to voluntarily report to each other and the public their heart surgery scores and star ratings.
