Baylor Scott & White Health – Temple Region Achieves Prestigious Designation for Nursing Excellence

Recognition as region is a first-time achievement for Baylor Scott & White;

TEMPLE, Texas – For the first time, a Baylor Scott & White Health region has achieved Magnet designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the largest and most prominent nurse-credentialing organization in the world. In the Baylor Scott & White – Temple Region, all departments and locations where registered nurses provide care have received the prestigious designation for nursing excellence from the ANCC Magnet Recognition Program®. The Magnet recognition program is the gold standard for nursing excellence and provides consumers with the ultimate benchmark for measuring quality of care.

These facilities join an elite group. Fewer than 8% of U.S. hospitals and even fewer regions have earned this status, which designates organizations where nursing leaders successfully align nursing strategic goals to improve the organization’s patient experience.

“Every day, our nurses foster an environment that engages staff, facilitates great ideas and allows us to communicate to improve patient outcomes through our integrated care delivery system,” noted Janice Walker, DHA, RN, BSN, system chief nursing officer, Baylor Scott & White. “This tremendous accomplishment highlights the passion we all share in medicine, while emphasizing the invaluable presence and contributions of our nurses in making healthcare better for those we serve.”

The rigorous and lengthy ANCC application and review required widespread participation from hospital leadership and team members. It also included a highly detailed on-site review by ANCC surveyors who are national nursing experts.

In its final report, ANCC appraisers recognized exemplary efforts by the Baylor Scott & White hospitals in establishing superior care delivery models to provide care during the pandemic, facilitating recognition programs to honor clinical nurses’ contributions, and for all units outperforming national benchmarks in several areas of patient care. The hospitals in the region include Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Temple, Baylor Scott & White McLane Children’s Medical Center and Baylor Scott & White Continuing Care Hospital – Temple.

“Our designation is significant and extraordinary, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic,” said Leslie Gembol, DNP, RN, chief nursing officer, Baylor Scott & White – Temple Region. “Our team members arrive each day with a focus on delivering the best care to our patients, and this recognition is a testament to their ‘never settle’ approach. Their positive impact on patient care is unparalleled and their resilience during this difficult year has proven to be second to none.”

Research demonstrates that Magnet recognition is beneficial to hospitals and patients who receive care at these facilities, resulting in:

  • Higher patient satisfaction with nurse communication, availability of help and receipt of discharge information.
  • Lower risk of 30-day mortality and lower failure-to-rescue rates.
  • Higher job satisfaction among nurses.
  • Lower nurse reports of intentions to leave their positions.
