Baylor Scott & White – Carrollton Wins Statewide Energy Saving Competition

Annual competition honors energy-efficient hospitals and health care facilities

Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Carrollton earned first place in an "Energy Roundup" competition hosted by Texas Association of Healthcare Facilities Management, shedding 13 percent of its energy consumption in 2016.

The Texas Association of Healthcare Facilities Management (TAHFM) hosts the annual statewide competition among hospitals and health care facilities to save energy and protect the climate. Facilities that compete work to reduce energy consumption through improvements in energy efficiency with help from TAHFM, the American Society for Healthcare Engineering and the EPA ENERGY STAR® program.

Facilities that shed the most energy waste and save the most water in their TAHFM region are recognized, including an overall Texas winner for hospitals. Baylor Scott & White – Carrollton is part of TAHFM region 5 and won second place in the same category in 2015.

"Removing costs from our health care system and maximizing efficiencies in all aspects of our delivery is critical to our success. This award is an appreciated recognition as we continually strive to provide exceptional service to our patients and their families," said Caleb O'Rear, president of Baylor Scott & White – Carrollton.

The medical center implemented several energy-saving strategies to accomplish a 13 percent reduction, including:

  • Upgrading heating and cooling systems in 80 patient rooms;
  • Lowering nighttime temperatures in unoccupied areas;
  • Reducing the amount of air supplied to an operating room when not in use, allowing temperature and/or humidity settings to drift; and
  • Installing variable frequency drive on air handlers to vary fan and pump motor speeds to match variable load applications.
