Baylor Health Care System, today announced that its Information Services organization made this year's InformationWeek 500, an annual listing of the nation's most innovative users of business technology. This is the fourth consecutive year Baylor has received this award. The 2010 list was revealed last night at a gala awards ceremony at the exclusive InformationWeek 500 Conference taking place at the St. Regis Monarch Beach Resort, Dana Point, CA. Baylor received the award for its innovative use of a Downtime Viewer.
Baylor Health Care System has implemented an electronic health record at four of its 12 hospitals. With patient data now online, staff wanted to avoid even a temporary loss of access to critical patient care information due to system downtimes. The IS team at Baylor addressed the downtime situation by re-using existing viewers that were already developed for backup, reporting and business continuity. Enabling the customized clinical viewers to connect to these backup databases allowed patient data to be displayed online throughout a downtime. With the Downtime Viewer staff has an immediate ‘view' of all patient records until applications are back online.
According to Baylor Senior Vice President and CIO, David Muntz, "the Downtime Viewer is easy to use and has the advantage of being able to display the absolute latest data in a format already familiar to the clinicians. Baylor could have spent millions on more hardware and not accomplished the same results."
"For 22 years, the InformationWeek 500 has honored the most innovative users of business technology," said InformationWeek Editor In Chief Rob Preston. "As we start to emerge from the worst recession in decades, the IT focus is now on driving growth—new sources of revenue, new relationships with customers, even new business models. This year's ranking placed special emphasis on those companies and business technology executives leading that charge."
InformationWeek identifies and honors the nation's most innovative users of information technology with its annual 500 listing and also tracks the technology, strategies, investments and administrative practices of America's best-known companies. Top winners have included: CME Group, Conway, National Semiconductor, Kimberly-Clark, Hilton Hotels and Unum. The InformationWeek 500 rankings are unique among corporate rankings as it spotlights the power of innovation in information technology, rather than simply identifying the biggest IT spenders.
