Obstructive sleep apnea is a serious health condition in which a person has episodes of stopped breaths during sleep. According to the National Institutes of Health, sleep apnea affects more than 12 million Americans. However, a majority of people who have condition don’t know they have it—because they are asleep. If left untreated, sleep apnea can cause cardiovascular diseases, weight gain, memory problems and headaches, according to the American Sleep Apnea Association.

For fiscal year 2008, the faith-based Baylor Health Care System will report $429.5 million in community benefits to the Texas Department of State Health Services.
