THE HEART HOSPITAL Baylor Plano Undergoing $15 Million Expansion

Increased demand for cardiovascular services had led to the ongoing expansion at THE HEART HOSPITAL Baylor Plano (THHBP).  "We have always had plans to expand," says Mark Valentine, hospital president, "but the expansion is occurring two years ahead of schedule."

THE HEART HOSPITAL Baylor Plano opened January 2007 adjacent to Baylor Regional Medical Center at Plano.  A sky bridge links the two facilities.

Currently, the hospital has added a fourth cardiac catheterization lab, a fourth electrophysiology lab and another additional operating room.  Currently, the 68-bed hospital has 4 catheterization labs, 4 electrophysiology labs, and 4 operating rooms with construction underway for a fifth operating room.  In addition, the hospital will relocate and expand its in-hospital laboratory.  The $15 million project began in October 2008.

"This expansion will allow us to see more patients and improve our scheduling," explains Valentine.

The two-year-old hospital, dedicated to the prevention and treatment of cardiovascular disease, has 19 cardiothoracic surgeons and 21 vascular surgeons on its medical staff.  Physicians performed more than 850 open heart surgeries; 5,000 catheterization procedures; and 1,000 vascular surgeries at THHBP in 2008. The hospital has served patients from 36 out of 50 states and Puerto Rico. Earlier this year, the hospital announced the opening of its dedicated cardiovascular research department.

THE HEART HOSPITAL Baylor Plano is the first and only freestanding, full-service hospital in this region dedicated solely to heart and vascular health care.  The hospital is a joint venture between Baylor Regional Medical Center at Plano and 112 cardiovascular physicians and surgeons practicing in North Texas.  Located on the same campus as Baylor Regional Medical Center at Plano, the full-service heart hospital offers cardiovascular diagnostic, interventional, and surgical capabilities as well as cardiac rehabilitation, wellness, and prevention services in a centralized, accessible location.  The hospital's nursing staff was recently recognized by the American Nurses Credentialing Center, a subsidiary of the American Nurses Association, with their Pathway to Excellence™ designation for promoting a safe, positive work environment.  The five-story facility is Baylor Health Care System's second dedicated heart hospital and the only one of its kind in North Texas.

Physicians are members of the medical staff at one of Baylor Health Care System's subsidiary, community or affiliated medical centers and are neither employees nor agents of those medical centers, Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas or Baylor Health Care System.
