THE HEART HOSPITAL Baylor Plano -- Homebuilders for a Day

On Nov. 6, 2010, as part of the "Women Build" project of the South Collin County Habitat for Humanity, employees and friends of THE HEART HOSPITAL Baylor Plano sported tool belts for a good cause – the hospital's first-ever participation in a Habitat for Humanity build.

With participation organized by Karen DeLavan, Senior Human Resources Consultant at THE HEART HOSPITAL, Dee Brazile and her daughter Monique Bell of Plano are now one step closer to becoming homeowners. With a total of 12 women and two men on-site, the team helped Dee and Monique hang sheet rock in their future home.

"I'm so glad THE HEART HOSPITAL was able to give back to our community in such a positive way," said Karen. "It was great to see so many of us working to help build this home."

Dee and Monique were excited to be making progress on their soon-to-be new residence. "We began the process nearly a year ago when we had our first meeting with Habitat," said Dee. "After completing the application process and volunteering many hours ourselves, we're hoping to move in early next year. We're so grateful to have places like THE HEART HOSPITAL who are willing to support us as we build our home."

Mark A. Valentine, President of THE HEART HOSPITAL, is not surprised that THE HEART HOSPITAL was involved in the build.

"Our hospital is full of people who recognize the importance of giving back to the community, and our participation that day was a great example of just that. Thank you to all the volunteers who sacrificed a few hours of their Saturday to help this family."

While not excluding men from the project, Women Build is a program within Habitat for Humanity that empowers and encourages women to participate in building Habitat for Humanity homes.

THE HEART HOSPITAL Baylor Plano is the first and only freestanding, full-service hospital in this region dedicated solely to heart and vascular health care. Today the hospital is a $134 million, 116-bed facility. THE HEART HOSPITAL provides inpatient and outpatient care, including diagnostic, interventional, surgical, and rehabilitation services, and wellness and prevention support. In addition to winning the Summit Award in 2009 and 2010, THE HEART HOSPITAL received the Texas Health Care Quality Improvement Award of Excellence in 2009 from TMF® Health Quality Institute, the Medicare Quality Improvement Organization for Texas. This designation identifies hospitals that are the best places for nurses to grow and succeed.

THE HEART HOSPITAL Baylor Plano focuses on delivering safe, quality, compassionate care. Its distinctive interior and plentiful amenities may remind you more of a luxury hotel than a hospital. Additional amenities include a wireless environment for communications needs. Guests and visitors enjoy complimentary valet parking or park themselves in the multi-story, covered parking facility adjacent to the hospital. And family and friends may visit hospital guests as their schedules permit.
