Texas Quality Foundation Awards Baylor Waxahachie with its Highest Honor

Baylor Medical Center at Waxahachie is the 2012 recipient of the Texas Award for Performance Excellence (TAPE), given by the Quality Texas Foundation.  Patterned after the Malcolm Baldrige National Quality Award criteria and process, the Texas Award for Performance Excellence is an annual recognition of Texas organizations that have achieved performance excellence and applied outstanding quality principles in their day-to-day operations. Texas organizations who serve as role models for quality, customer satisfaction and performance excellence receive this prestigious award. Baylor Waxahachie learned they were the 2012 recipient on Thursday, March 8.

The Quality Texas Foundation cited several best practices that qualified Baylor Waxahachie to be its TAPE award recipient. The hospital utilizes a shared leadership system that is well integrated throughout the organization. The system empowers participants from all workforce levels and stakeholder groups to affect governance and makes them responsible for the impact of their decisions. The shared leadership system is integrated with key work processes; used to deploy and implement strategic goals and action plans; utilized in the performance improvement process; and used in fostering open two-way communication both vertically and horizontally.

“I’m am very proud of this accomplishment for Baylor Waxahachie and the Baylor Health Care System, “It is validation that we are on a continuous process improvement journey to improve patient care and that we put patients at the center of everything we do,” said Jay Fox, president, Baylor Waxahachie.

Another identified best practice is the Baylor Waxahachie process to identify and create service offerings to meet the requirements of its customer groups, market segments, enter new markets, and attract potential customers that ties into its strategic planning process. The implementation of the Patient Advisory Council and the work of the Auxiliary to Baylor Medical Center at Waxahachie are examples of the organization responding to its stakeholders’ needs. Baylor Waxahachie was also noted for their cooperative relationships with the local nursing homes that allow for continuity of care by sharing evidence-based practices and ensuring standardized physician-to-physician communications regarding patient transition from hospital to nursing home.

The award will be presented to Baylor Waxahachie in June during the Texas award ceremony. In 2011, Baylor Medical Center at Irving was the TAPE recipient.  www.texas-quality.org
