The Sleep Disorders Center at Baylor Regional Medical Center at Grapevine has received full accreditation from the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM). The center provides comprehensive care for sleep disorders and other related conditions.
"We are pleased to be recognized for our commitment to quality care and services for the diagnosis and treatment of sleep disorders," said Doug Lawson, president at Baylor Regional Medical Center at Grapevine.
To receive accreditation, a sleep center must meet or exceed all standards for professional health care as designated by the AASM. The accreditation process involves detailed inspection of a center's facility and staff, including an evaluation of testing procedures, patient contacts, and physician training. Additionally, the facility's goals must be clearly stated and include plans for positively affecting the quality of medical care in the community.
The Sleep Disorders Center at Baylor Grapevine is staffed by a high caliber team of health care professionals including board certified sleep medicine physicians on the medical staff, registered sleep technicians and therapists. The center is dedicated to alleviating symptoms, improving sleep patterns and improving the quality of life of patients.
Last year, the Sleep Disorders Center performed more than 700 sleep studies. These comprehensive studies are used when sleep apnea, narcolepsy or abnormal sleep behaviors are suspected. The setting of the Sleep Disorders Center is similar to a hotel room. During the study, technicians monitor the patient's heart rate, oxygen levels, brain waves, muscle tension and breathing patterns. The results from the test help referring physicians determine an effective treatment plan for the patient. Diagnostic studies include:
- Overnight diagnostic sleep study
- Daytime diagnostic sleep studies
- One level (CPAP) or bilevel (BiPAP) positive airway treatment
- Daytime multiple sleep latency test (MSLT)
- Daytime maintenance of wakefulness test (MWT)
