Baylor Scott & White McLane Children's Medical Center's new ambulance, affectionately known as "Little Brother," begins its official first day of service today.
"Little Brother" is Baylor Scott & White McLane Children's second neonatal and pediatric transport ambulance, joining its "Big Brother," the medical center's first new ambulance since March 2013.
"We are grateful for the opportunity to help transport children and their family members in what can be tough times during a medical event," said Brandon Dudik, manager for Baylor Scott & White McLane Children's transport team. "With each call we take, we want children and their family members to know that we are able to take care of their needs if they need to transition from one medical facility to another."
With "Little Brother," the Baylor Scott & White medical helicopter, and an increase in the number of neonatal and pediatric transport team members, the medical center hopes to increase its ability to respond to patients in need of a higher level of care to and from Baylor Scott & White McLane Children's. Since beginning the transport program, the team has traveled throughout Texas, including Abilene, Dallas, Beaumont and Houston.
"Over the last few years, we've seen the growing needs in communities we serve and beyond," said Ellen Hansen, chief operating officer and chief nursing officer for Baylor Scott & White McLane Children's. "Our community has been instrumental in helping us meet the needs of children in our area and throughout Texas. This new ambulance increases our capability to meet the needs of children."
The Visionaries of the Baylor Scott & White Central Texas Foundation helped acquire the medical center's second ambulance through their annual Boots and Bandanas event in May. With community support, the event raised the much-needed funds to purchase the ambulance. The vehicle made its official debut Sept. 25 at the medical center when the Visionaries had their first opportunity to view the new transport.
