The American Cancer Society recommends that women begin receiving annual screening mammograms starting at age 40 – sooner for those at high risk of breast cancer. Unfortunately, with how hectic women's lives are, sometimes getting the potentially life-saving screening just isn't convenient. Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas' Darlene G. Cass Mobile Women's Imaging Center is changing all that.
Ellis County women in need of a mammogram should mark their calendars for Saturday, April 26, and Thursday, May 15, when the mobile mammography unit, which is equipped with advanced digital mammography, will be making stops in Midlothian and Waxahachie respectively. Digital mammograms use less radiation, shorten exam times and are considered better for women under age 50 and those with denser breast tissue.
"We know a lot of women don't have the time to go to the hospital to receive a screening mammogram, so we're bringing mammography closer to them," explains Sherry Fox, mobile mammography unit coordinator for Baylor. "A mammogram is the best thing you can do for your breast health, and our mobile unit makes getting hospital-quality results quick and convenient."
The mobile mammography unit will be at the Midlothian Chamber of Commerce Spring Fling in front of Heritage Park, 234 N. 8th St., on Saturday, April 26 from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. On Thursday, May 15, the unit will be in the recreation parking lot at the City of Waxahachie offices, 401 S. Elm St., from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Most insurance plans cover screening mammograms. Appointments are on a first-come, first-serve basis and space is limited. Call (214) 820-3040 to schedule or for more information.
