Is a quivering heart the sign of love or a heart arrhythmia? If you ask a cardiologist, the answer mostly likely would be arrhythmia or irregular heartbeat. One specific type of arrhythmia is called atrial fibrillation, or AFib, which affects 2.7 million Americans, according to the American Heart Association (AHA). Many people are unaware that AFib is a serious condition, which can double the risk of heart-related deaths, and causes a 4-5 fold increased risk for stroke, according to AHA.
The heart has its own electrical system, and this system makes the signals that start each heartbeat. In some people, this system can malfunction causing the heart to beat too rapidly and unevenly. Cardiologists know that atrial fibrillation puts people at increased risk for a stroke because the rapid, uneven heartbeat causes blood to pool in the heart instead of being pushed out of the heart to other parts of the body.
