Baylor Scott & White All Saints Medical Center – Fort Worth Joan Katz Breast Center is now the Joan Katz Cancer Resource Center. The facility was renamed to better reflect the robust services provided to patients with all forms of cancer. When the center was established in 2010 on the Baylor Scott & White – Fort Worth campus, breast cancer support services were its initial focus.
Suzy Salomon, manager of operations for the Joan Katz Cancer Resource Center, said it quickly became clear how patients valued the cancer navigation and support resources.
"When patients hear the words "You have cancer," their world is turned upside down,"Salomon said. "We're here to help them understand their diagnoses, answer any questions, set-up appointments and follow up with them before, during and after treatment. We truly are with them every step of the way."
Since its inception, the Joan Katz Cancer Resource Center has helped more than 6,350 patients with cancer and their families free of charge, regardless of where the patient receives treatment. Under its new name, it will continue to focus and build upon its cancer navigation program, which has become an essential part of making it through the cancer care journey for many patients and families.
"We already help navigate those individuals with other types of cancer through the cancer care process, so we want our name to be more inclusive and reflective of all the kinds of cancer patients we help," Salomon added.
Navigation services are available 24/7 to anyone facing a cancer diagnosis. The center offers dedicated navigation services for breast cancer, gynecological cancer, cancers of the blood and young adults facing a cancer diagnosis.
Joan Katz Cancer Resource Center is home to other support resources, including volunteers who are cancer survivors to provide hope and support to cancer patients and families, as well as a breast cancer support group.
