The Diabetes Health and Wellness Institute (DHWI) recently named Brenda Jackson as the new chair of its Board of Directors. Jackson, who is senior vice president and chief customer officer for Oncor Electric Delivery, has served on the DHWI board since it was formed–long before the facility officially opened a little more than a year ago. She is replacing former chairman, Ronald Steinhart.
"We've been so fortunate to have had Brenda on the board for the past few years, and we look forward to her continued leadership as chairwoman," says Donna Rice, MBA, BSN, RN, CDE, DHWI president. "I can't think of anyone better suited to help build on the success of DHWI as we move forward."
Baylor Health Care System invested $15 million to create DHWI, which opened last June in the Frazier community of South Dallas–a community with one of the highest incidences of diabetes in the state. Since then, more than 1,500 community members have participated in DHWI's diabetes management programs, including nutrition classes, exercise classes, diabetes self-management programs, and health and wellness initiatives.
"DHWI is so important to this community and the fight against diabetes," says Jackson. "It changes lives and entire families, and I'm really excited to continue to be a part of that as chairwoman."
Jackson has a long history of civic leadership, serving on the boards of the Teacher's Retirement System of Texas, YWCA of Metropolitan Dallas, City of Dallas Private Industry Council and Dallas Symphony Association Board of Governors. She also spearheaded the development and management of Oncor's corporate philanthropy and employee volunteer programs.
In addition to Jackson's promotion, the board also has welcomed a new member, Robert Estrada, who is chairman of the Dallas-based financial services firm Estrada Hinojosa & Company, Inc.
