Baylor Regional Medical Center at Grapevine recently recognized the DFW Airport EMS/Fire department for best STEMI (ST-Segment Elevation Myocardial Infarction) door-to-balloon times for heart attack patients transported in 2010.
Door-to-balloon times refer to the time a patient enters the emergency room to the time the patient receives a life-saving procedure. The less time it takes to restore blood flow, the less damaged is sustained by heart muscle. This length of time is critical when a patient is having a heart attack because "time is muscle."
DFW Airport EMS/Fire achieved an average door-to-balloon time of 36.7 minutes—significantly lower than national standard of 90 minutes, established by the American College of Cardiology.
"DFW Airport did a great job assessing critical patient situations and providing the proper advanced procedures in the field and during transport which assisted in reducing the door-to-balloon time at the hospital," said Ron Jensen, DO, medical director of emergency services and vice president of medical affairs at Baylor Regional Medical Center at Grapevine. "We are thankful for the commitment of DFW Airport and other local emergency medical providers who partner with us to provide quality care to the community.
