For the second year in a row, Baylor Medical Center at Waxahachie was ranked in an annual study identifying the 100 top U.S. hospitals based on their overall organizational performance. Baylor Waxahachie administration learned of their latest achievement on Friday, April 13.
The Thomson Reuters 100 Top Hospitals® study evaluates performance in 10 areas: mortality; medical complications; patient safety; average patient stay; expenses; profitability; patient satisfaction; adherence to clinical standards of care; post-discharge mortality; and readmission rates for acute myocardial infarction (heart attack), heart failure, and pneumonia. The study has been conducted annually since 1993.
"Being designated as a 100 top hospital two years in a row is a tremendous honor. It shows the daily dedication that the physicians on the medical staff and staff have to providing quality health care to this community. We are thrilled to be recipients,” says Jay Fox, president, Baylor Waxahachie. Baylor Waxahachie was ranked in the category of small community hospitals.
A news release from Thomson Reuter’s states: “If all Medicare patients received care equal to that provided by hospitals that made Thomson Reuters' top 100 list for 2012, 186,000 people who died would be alive, more than $4.3 billion would be saved, and about 56,000 patients would have avoided complications from hospital procedures they otherwise endured.” http://www.healthleadersmedia.com/content/LED-279017/Thomson-Reuters-Names-Top-100-Hospitals-for-2012
Thomson Reuters made that assessment after evaluating 2,886 short-term acute-care, non federal hospitals for quality characteristics that included Medicare cost reports, Medicare Provider Analysis and Review (MedPAR) data, as well as core measures and patient experience scores tallied by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services to come up with this year's list. Hospitals do not apply for this honor nor do winners pay to market this honor.
