Baylor Grapevine Performs Gynecological Surgery Using the da Vinci® Surgical System

Baylor Regional Medical Center at Grapevine recently purchased the da Vinci Robot surgical system to perform laparoscopic minimally invasive gynecological and urological surgeries.

"The addition of the da Vinci Surgical System is a continuation of our efforts to expand the capabilities of our Medical Center to meet the needs of the many communities that we support," says Baylor Grapevine President Doug Lawson. "We are excited to offer this technological advancement to our patients."

Surgeons on the medical staff at Baylor Grapevine, along with anesthesiologists on the Baylor Grapevine medical staff and nurses and technicians, performed a total laparoscopic hysterectomy, bilateral salping-oophorectomy (removal of both ovaries and fallopian tubes) and lymph node dissection using the da Vinci® S HD™ System on July 15.

The da Vinci S HD Surgical System integrates 3D HD endoscopy and advanced robotic technology to virtually extend the surgeon's eyes and hands into the surgical field.

The surgeon operates while seated comfortably at a console viewing a 3D image of the surgical field. The surgeon's fingers grasp the master controls below the display, with hands and wrists naturally positioned relative to his or her eyes. The system seamlessly translates the surgeon's hand, wrist and finger movements into precise, real-time movements of surgical instruments inside the patient.

Baylor Regional Medical Center at Grapevine is a 233-bed, full-service, fully-accredited not-for-profit hospital, serving residents in more than 20 cities throughout the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex. The hospital offers advanced medical care for brain and spine conditions, cardiovascular care, intensive care, diagnostic imaging, women's services, neonatal intensive care, sleep disorders and emergency care. VHA, Inc. honored Baylor Grapevine with a 2007 leadership award for its care of patients with acute myocardial infarction (heart attack) and heart failure.
