Baylor Regional Medical Center at Plano was recently designated a Blue Distinction® Center for Spine Surgery by Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Texas. This designation alerts patients and physicians that Baylor Regional Medical Center at Plano has met objective, evidence-based selection criteria that demonstrate reliability in delivering spine surgery with better overall outcomes for patients.
The Blue Distinction® Centers initiative has more than 15 years of experience in working with expert physicians and medical organizations with the goal of helping consumers find quality specialty care on a consistent basis, while enabling and encouraging healthcare professionals to improve the overall quality and delivery of care nationwide. The selection criteria for the Blue Distinction® Centers for Spine Surgery program was developed with input from expert physicians and medical organizations, and include a comprehensive evaluation of structure, process and outcome measures. Blue Distinction® Centers for Spine Surgery have demonstrated a commitment to quality care and offer comprehensive inpatient spine surgery services (including discectomy, fusion and decompression procedures). Each designated facility must score at least 60 total points and meet the selection criteria requirements.
In addition, the Baylor Scoliosis Center is proud to announce the addition of Michael F. O'Brien, M.D., spine surgeon to the medical staff. Dr. O'Brien brings years of research and expertise in the area of complex spinal surgery and will serve as the medical director of research for the Center. In his new role, Dr. O'Brien will oversee all scoliosis and complex spine deformity research efforts and studies, including efforts with other scoliosis and deformity institutions. He will guide the research team and help determine future research opportunities as well as present findings at local, national, and international association meetings. Dr. O'Brien's research will be used by the Baylor Health Care System to help determine new treatment options for scoliosis and spine deformity.
Dr. O'Brien is a fellowship trained and board certified orthopedic surgeon specializing in the diagnosis and treatment of spinal disorders and deformities, including reconstructive spine surgery for children, adolescents, and adults. He earned his bachelor's degree from Columbia University and then completed medical school, a surgical internship and orthopaedic surgical residency at the State University of New York at Downstate in Brooklyn, NY. Dr. O'Brien went on to complete a Spine Surgery Fellowship at Washington University Medical Center in St. Louis, MO, an International Spine Fellowship at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery in London, and a Scoliosis Research Society Traveling Fellowship in Chicago, IL. In addition, Dr. O'Brien has received many academic honors and awards for his research including the Dean's list at Columbia University and the Orthopedic Research Award at SUNY Downstate Medical College.

Richard Hostin, M.D., orthopaedic spine surgeon, was recently named medical director of the Baylor Scoliosis Center at Baylor Regional Medical Center at Plano. In his new role, Dr. Hostin will provide administrative direction of the services provided at the Center, including development of new and existing programs at the Center. In addition, Dr. Hostin will assist in training and educating hospital personnel regarding scoliosis procedures and techniques and technology used in caring for patients at the Center.
Dr. Hostin focuses on caring for patients with complex adolescent and adult spinal deformities including scoliosis, kyphosis, post-traumatic deformity and complex revision surgery. After receiving his medical degree from the University of Oklahoma, Dr. Hostin completed an orthopedic surgery residency at the University of California at Davis. He received additional sub-specialty training in spine surgery during his fellowship at the Twin Cities Spine Center in Minneapolis. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, the North American Spine Society, the Texas Orthopedic Association, the American Medical Association as well as the medical honor society Alpha Omega Alpha.
The Baylor Scoliosis Center is a national referral center located on the campuses of Baylor Regional Medical Center at Plano and Baylor All Saints Medical Center at Fort Worth and focuses on the care of adolescent and adult scoliosis. It is the first Center of its kind in the Dallas/Fort Worth area devoted to treatment, surgery and care of advanced spinal curvature.
