Auxiliary to Baylor Medical Center at Garland Makes First Donation to Emergency Department Renovation and Expansion

On Tuesday, March 24, the Auxiliary to Baylor Medical Center at Garland officially donated $69,200, the first installment of a $350,000 pledge to Baylor Medical Center at Garland.  These funds will be directed to the renovation and expansion of the Baylor Garland emergency department (ED). Baylor Garland officially broke ground a two-year, $10.5 million project to redesign and expand its emergency department, Thursday, March 26.

Comprised of approximately 200 members, some who have been members for decades, the Auxiliary raises funds for Baylor Garland through the sale of popcorn and vending machine goodies along with profits from the hospital gift shop which the Auxiliary members manage. Organized in October 1959, the Auxiliary support the patients, visitors, families and staff members at Baylor Garland. The Baylor Garland ED is one of the areas in which Auxiliary members regularly volunteer their time.

According to Al Moore, vice president of administration for Baylor Garland, the ED's footprint will expand out into what is now the ambulance drive. "The expansion will add 4,300 square feet to the current 20,300-square-foot department, for a total of 24,600 square feet," he says. Some key features of the new design include:

  • Dedicated ambulance entrance
  • New waiting area
  • A sub-waiting area where call-ahead patients who have an existing relationship
  • with a physician on the Baylor Garland Medical staff can begin treatment, which will help alleviate overcrowding
  • 20 treatment rooms, all private
  • 7 critical-care rooms

The Baylor Health Care System Foundation kicked off a fundraising campaign in January to enlist the support of the community in the ED expansion. "The people in Garland know us as 'their hospital,' and we've always had a strong giving spirit in this community," Moore says. "We're looking forward to a successful campaign and to opening the doors to the new ED in 2010." The Baylor Garland ED treats more than 60,000 patients annually in a facility that dates back to 1994 and is the second busiest ED in the Baylor Health Care System.

The 263-bed Baylor Medical Center at Garland is part of Baylor Health Care System. For fiscal year 2008, the faith-based Baylor Health Care System reported 429.5 million* in community benefit, which includes providing care for charity patients and patients enrolled in government programs such as Medicare and Medicaid, as well as the unreimbursed cost of medical education, research and community programs.
