Baylor Regional Medical Center at Grapevine recently received two national awards-- Get With The Guidelines®–Heart Failure Gold Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association/American College of Cardiology and the Get With The Guidelines®–Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award from the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association.
The heart failure award signifies that Baylor Grapevine reached an aggressive goal of treating heart failure patients according to the guidelines of care. As a result, heart failure patients are started on aggressive risk-reduction therapies if needed, including cholesterol-lowering drugs, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors, aspirin, diuretics and anticoagulants while in the hospital. Before discharge, they also receive education on managing their heart failure and overall health, including lifestyle modifications and follow-up care.
According to the American Heart Association, about 5.7 million people suffer from heart failure. Statistics also show that, each year, 670,000 new cases are diagnosed and more than 277,000 people will die of heart failure.
To receive the stroke award, Baylor Grapevine developed a comprehensive system for rapid diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients admitted to the emergency department. This includes always being equipped to provide brain imaging scans, having neurologistsavailable to conduct patient evaluations and using clot-busting medications when appropriate.
In addition to the Get With The Guideline-Stroke award, Baylor Grapevine has been recognized as a recipient of the association’s Target: Stroke Honor Roll, for improving stroke care.
According to the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association, stroke is one of the leading causes of death and serious, long-term disability in the United States. On average, someone suffers a stroke every 40 seconds; someone dies of a stroke every four minutes; and 795,000 people suffer a new or recurrent stroke each year.
