Two years of intensive clinical and administrative work has earned Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – Grapevine a Texas Level II Major Trauma Center designation and a verification by the American College of Surgeons. The hospital is one of 19 Level II Major Trauma Centers in Texas.
"We started this journey in response to the wishes of the many municipalities served by this hospital," said Steve Newton, president, Baylor Scott & White – Grapevine. "In trauma care, time is critical, and having the availability of a Level II trauma center in this community allows for immediate care," Newton continued. "Now patients and their families can get comprehensive care right here in our community for everything from minor injuries to the most critical, life threatening injuries."
Previously, ambulances had to drive an average of 30 minutes to reach a Level II Major Trauma Center in Tarrant or Dallas counties.
"A trauma team provides a multi-disciplinary response to address every angle of care for the injured patient," explained Danielle Sherar, trauma program manager, Baylor Scott & White – Grapevine. "The trauma rooms within the emergency department are set up with necessary equipment to provide time sensitive care."
Trauma centers have specific processes to anticipate patient care needs based on injury patterns.
"On average 15 different pre-hospital municipalities come through this facility every day," said Sherar. "Our facility offers services to Tarrant, Denton, Wise, and Dallas counties. When we started this designation journey, they were with us every step of the way."
The hospital began pursuit of Texas level II designation in November 2015.
By 2022, Northeast Tarrant County population is expected to increase by 8.2 percent, according to Baylor Scott & White Health marketing research. With population growth usually comes the need for a higher level of medical services. Tarrant County already is the third largest county in Texas by population. That number may grow to almost 2.7 million by 2040, according to U.S. Census Bureau data.
Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas is a Level I Comprehensive Trauma Facility.
