On April 6, Zana Tedford of Watauga became the 100th patient to have a minimally invasive surgery with the da Vinci Robot surgical system at Baylor Regional Medical Center at Grapevine. The hospital performed its first surgery using the da Vinci Robot on July 15, 2008.
"The da Vinci surgical system offers patients a minimally invasive approach because the incisions are smaller and recovery is faster," said Mark Messing, M.D, a gynecological oncologist on the medical staff at Baylor Grapevine. "Unlike conventional surgery, patients who undergo this surgical option experience less pain and scarring, less risk of infection and shorter hospital stays."
The da Vinci Surgical System integrates 3D High Definition endoscopy and advanced robotic technology to virtually extend the surgeon's eyes and hands into the surgical field. The surgeon's fingers grasp the master controls below the display, with hands and wrists naturally positioned relative to his or her eyes. The system seamlessly translates the surgeon's hands, wrist and finger movements into precise, real-time movements of surgical instruments inside the patient.
Some of the benefits experienced by surgeons using the new technology over traditional approaches are greater surgical precision, increased range of motion, improved agility, enhanced visualization and improved access to the surgical site.
"To achieve 100 surgeries in less than a year after acquiring this robotic surgical system demonstrates the interest of our patients and medical staff in being able to access the latest technology," said Baylor Grapevine President Doug Lawson.
