Shaping A New Medical Innovation
Uterus Transplantation provides a promising potential treatment for women with uterine factor infertility who are unable to carry a pregnancy due to lack of the uterus. These women are either born without a uterus or lost the uterus at a young age.
In 2016, Baylor University Medical Center, through the Baylor Scott & White Research Institute, launched a pioneering clinical trial to explore uterus transplantation with the goal of achieving a healthy pregnancy and live birth.
Through the uterus transplant clinical trial, Baylor University Medical Center’s clinicians and researchers have advanced the science of uterus transplantation for the benefit of the broader medical community and women with uterine factor infertility.
In 2017, the program announced the first successful live birth after a uterus transplant in the United States. Since then, it has grown to be the World's largest program and the clinical trial team has continued to celebrate medical milestones in the field of uterus transplantation including:
-
Delivered the first baby in the US to a mother who received a uterus transplant
-
Successfully delivered 18 babies to mothers who received uterus transplants (as of May 2023)
-
Performed more uterus transplant surgeries (25) than any other program in the world
-
Most published uterus transplant program, with 90+ publications across surgical, gynecologic and transplantation journals in 6 years
-
First in the U.S. to deliver multiple babies born to the same mother after a uterus transplant
-
First in the world to perform uterus transplants from both living and deceased donor
-
First in the U.S. to perform robotic-assisted donor surgeries for uterus transplants
-
First in the world to offer uterus transplants outside of a clinical trial
First in the world to deliver a baby born via a uterus transplant outside of a clinical trial
