Scientists and medical teams throughout the world continue to search for and learn more about the Omicron variant of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. Omicron was designated a variant of concern by the World Health Organization in November.

Genomic sequencing of SARS-CoV-2 positive specimens is critical in support of the latest effort by labs across the globe to locate the emerging Omicron variant.

Baylor Scott & White’s network of laboratories are performing this important work in service to our communities.

Our best defense against the virus is increasing our communities’ vaccination rates. In fact, with the emergence of Omicron, the CDC also now recommends that all adults 18 and older receive a booster six months after completing their initial COVID-19 vaccine series.

With the holiday season upon us—and the promise of precious time with friends and family—we must continue taking necessary and evidence-based precautions to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe.
