Baylor Scott & White Health Opens Cancer Center in College Station

State’s newest cancer treatment center harnesses technology, clinical trials to combat No. 2 cause of U.S. death

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – Brazos Valley residents have a new local home for hope and a new option for cancer care: Baylor Scott & White Medical Center – College Station has added a comprehensive cancer center.

The opening of the new 10,000-square-foot cancer center significantly increases the area's cancer care, allowing more patients the opportunity to receive quality treatment closer to home.

"We are honored today to expand our offerings to now include radiation oncology, effectively completing the care continuum for those seeking advanced cancer treatment in our area," said Jason Jennings, president, Baylor Scott & White Health – College Station region. "With the opening of this cancer center, Baylor Scott & White renews its commitment to the communities of the Brazos Valley to bring advances in diagnosis, research and treatment of cancer to residents so that their cancer battle can be fought close to home."

Part of this commitment includes Baylor Scott & White Research Institute's investment in new approaches to provide patients access to advanced treatment protocols and clinical trials, with more than 2000 active research projects among 60 different specialties.

The $6.1 million cancer center opened its doors in January, adding radiation oncology services to the medical and surgical oncology services offered at the medical center since its opening three years ago. New to the center's arsenal in the fight against cancer, image-guided radiation therapy equipment uses precise CT scanning to map the tumor's exact size and location. This helps the radiation therapy team target the tumor more precisely. Completion of the cancer center provides a single location for diagnostics, treatments and support services, all supported by a single electronic medical record.

"Our team approach to medicine and care, all centered on the patient, has been the guiding tradition of our practice," said William Rayburn, MD, Baylor Scott & White – College Station region chief medical officer. "Our medical team pools our talents, skills, and experience to work together and provide personalized care for each patient. With the new capabilities of this cancer center, we now expand the care we can provide."

Physicians on the medical staff for the center are medical oncologists, along with a radiation oncologist.
