Joel Allison is president and chief executive officer of Baylor Health Care System, one of the largest health care systems in Texas. With almost 30 years of health care management experience, Allison is recognized as a local and national leader in the industry. Modern Healthcare magazine recognizes Allison annually as one of the “100 Most Powerful People in Health Care,” and he has received important honors from both the Texas Hospital Association and DFW Hospital Council. He has long been committed to the community, having served as chairman of United Way of Metropolitan Dallas and president of the Greater Dallas Chamber. Allison is committed to helping Baylor achieve its vision of being trusted as the best place to give and receive safe, quality, compassionate health care.
 

Albert C. Black, Jr.

Chairman-Elect, Board of Trustees

South Dallas entrepreneur Albert C. Black, Jr. is active as a public volunteer and community leader. He is chairman-elect of the Baylor Health Care System board of trustees. In addition, he is president of On-Target Supplies and Logistics, Ltd., a supply chain management company located in South Dallas with additional logistics operations throughout North Texas. Black is from the Frazier Court community in South Dallas, where the Diabetes Health and Wellness Institute is located. He is passionate about improving the area through job creation and other community initiatives. Black is a graduate of the University of Texas at Dallas and has an MBA from SMU’s Cox School of Business.
 
Paul Convery, MD

Chief Medical Officer and Senior Vice President

Paul Convery, M.D., serves as senior vice president and chief medical officer (CMO) for Baylor Health Care System. As CMO, Dr. Convery works with physician and operational leadership to advance health care improvement initiatives at Baylor facilities across North Texas. He plays a vital role overseeing Baylor’s Southern Sector Health Initiative, which includes the Diabetes Health and Wellness Institute. Under his leadership, Baylor received the National Quality Forum’s National Quality Healthcare Award in 2008. Dr. Convery has appeared on Modern Healthcare magazine’s annual “50 Most Powerful Physician Executives” list several times.
 
Mayor Tom Leppert

Member, Board of Trustees

Baylor Health Care System
Tom Leppert has served as mayor of Dallas since 2007. He also is a Baylor Health Care System board member and an ardent supporter of the South Sector Health Initiative and the Diabetes Health and Wellness Institute. The City of Dallas has been a vital partner in the effort, having donated the Juanita J. Craft Recreation Center to house the Institute. Mayor Leppert is on the Executive Committee for the U.S. Conference of Mayors and served on the White House Fellows Commission. Throughout his life, he has been a community volunteer, serving charitable organizations at the local and national level.
 
Folshade F. Lester, MD

Wellness Institute

Folshade F. Lester, M.D., is medical director of the Diabetes Health and Wellness Institute and a board-certified family practice physician. In her role as medical director of the Institute, she seeks to set a new standard of care not only for the community it serves but nationally as well. Dr. Lester is dedicated to bringing comprehensive, holistic health care to the underserved.

 

 
Donna Rice

President, Southern Sector Health Initiative

An affiliate of Baylor Health Care System and Baylor University Medical Center at Dallas

Donna Rice is president of the Southern Sector Health Initiative (SSHI) and is a nationally recognized diabetes educator. Having served as president of the American Association of Diabetes Educators, she is frequently called upon to speak on the topic of diabetes education and has authored many publications on diabetes care. As president of SSHI, she seeks to create a new care model for diabetes focused on health care, prevention education and research in the Frazier community of South Dallas.

David B. Walls is chairman of the Baylor Health Care System board of trustees.
He works with executive leadership and other board members to advance Baylor’s mission of serving all people through exemplary health care, education, research and community service.
 
Board of Directors
Brenda Jackson Brenda Jackson is senior vice president of business operations for Oncor, formerly named TXU Electric Delivery. In addition to overseeing vital business functions, she spearheads the development and management of the company’s corporate philanthropy efforts. Throughout her career, Jackson has served on many civic and community boards.
Lee Jackson Lee Jackson is chancellor of the University of North Texas System. He began his career in the Dallas city manager’s office, served ten years in the Texas House of Representatives and was elected four times as Dallas County judge. He has received many awards for regional leadership and has initiated new programs in juvenile justice, air quality and transportation.
Charles Mitchell, MD Charles Mitchell, M.D., P.A., is a board-certified orthopaedic surgeon who has practiced in the Dallas area since 1973. A native Texan, Dr. Mitchell received his medical degree from Howard University Medical School and has been passionate about community health throughout his career.
Ronald G. Steinhart Ronald G. Steinhart is a certified public accountant presently serving as chairman of the board of directors of the Diabetes Health and Wellness Institute. He also is a director for several publicly traded companies. Active in the Dallas financial community for more than 37 years, Steinhart has held leadership positions with civic and banking industry groups on the local, state and national levels.
John L. Ware
In Memoriam
John L. Ware spent more than 20 years in municipal management and had special expertise in the establishment of public/private business partnerships and the financing of large investments in central-city districts. As city manager of Dallas, he initiated over $7 billion in public/private partnerships with several of the nation’s leading financial institutions. He passed away in May 2010.
