Baylor Scott & White Health Interventional Cardiology Team in Fort Worth Uses New Stent to Treat Complex Lesions

Cardiologists first in Texas to implant Tryton Side Branch Stent

DALLAS – Interventional cardiologists on the medical staff of Baylor Scott & White All Saints Medical Center – Fort Worth implanted the first dedicated bifurcation device to receive regulatory approval in the U.S.

The cardiac stent, called the Tryton Side Branch Stent, is used to treat plaque buildup at a site where one artery branches from another, also known as bifurcation.

Coronary artery disease (CAD) is the leading cause of death in the U.S. for men and women. Approximately 20 – to 30 percent of patients undergoing percutaneous coronary interventions (PCI) to open blocked arteries have a bifurcation lesion.

The Tryton Side Branch Stent allows interventional cardiologists to treat both the main and side branch with one stent. Provisional stenting of the main branch is the current approach to care, but in many cases the side branch is not stented, leaving it vulnerable to complications such as occlusion (narrowing) requiring bailout stenting.

"Today's case was an example of how interventional cardiologists on the Baylor Scott & White - Fort Worth medical staff are using advanced technology for an improved experience for our heart patients," said Farhan Ali, MD, medical director, interventional cardiology, Baylor Scott & White – Fort Worth. "We are proud that the team at Baylor Scott & White –Fort Worth is able to bring these innovations to the region."
The procedure was performed in late March after the Tryton Side Branch Stent was approved by Food and Drug Administration in early March.
