The Guide to Achieving STEEEP Health Care

Insights into the Baylor Scott & White Health Quality Improvement Journey

Achieving health care that is safe, timely, effective, efficient, equitable, and patient-centered care (STEEEP®) is not an endpoint, but a journey. This journey requires a commitment to quality improvement from the highest levels of leadership combined with the interdependent development of several key components of health care delivery: administration and governance, clinical leadership, quality programs and expertise, data analytics, and accreditation.

As each health care organization travels along its quality journey, these components must evolve. With each component of a given phase of the quality journey firmly developed, the organization can expect to advance to the next phase knowing that the requisite factors are aligned.

The Guide to Achieving STEEEP Health Care, a new book published by CRC Press, written by David Ballard, MD, MSPH, PhD, FACP, chief quality officer of Baylor Scott & White Health and president of the STEEEP Global Institute, highlights Baylor Scott & White Health's quality improvement journey and features practical strategies for delivering STEEEP care.

This guide serves as companion to the Shingo Award winning book Achieving STEEEP Health Care, published by CRC Press in September 2013, which describes the Baylor Health Care System journey to delivering STEEEP care (Ballard et al. 2013). To complement that book, this guide provides a template for creating a quality improvement program scalable to the size and scope of any domestic or international health care organization.

"Achieving best clinical outcomes at lower costs, while creating an ideal patient and provider experience, requires a set of intentional structures and processes. Dr. Ballard and his team have developed the 'how-to manual'," said Ziad Haydar, MD, MBA, senior vice president and chief medical officer of Ascension Health about this guide.
