Baylor Joins National Collaborative To Improve Health Care, Reduce Costs

Baylor Health Care System has joined Mayo Clinic, Cleveland Clinic and several other top health care organizations across the country as a member of the High Value Healthcare Collaborative (HVHC). The cooperative is a relatively new team approach by some of the nation's most prestigious health care institutions to rein in health care costs while improving quality of care.

Members of the HVHC share critical information and resources, such as costs, outcomes data, best practices and care pathways with each other and the public. The cooperative also has expanded measurement standards.

"True health care reform fundamentally means addressing two things: quality and costs," explains Paul Convery, MD, Baylor chief medical officer. "The High Value Healthcare Collaborative allows some of America's leading health care organizations to work together to achieve everyone's goal of getting the best possible care at the lowest possible cost."

Baylor was nominated and accepted for membership based on criteria that includes having a strong, research-based quality improvement program, advanced health information technology, solid financial and operational resources, a committed staff and a history of working with other institutions.

"Baylor is honored to be part of such an esteemed group of organizations," says Dr. Convery. "By sharing our own ongoing and successful efforts to improve outcomes while cutting costs, we're confident that we can play a big role in developing a national solution to many of the challenges facing our industry and more importantly, our patients."

Initially, HVHC is focusing improvement efforts on nine relatively common conditions, whose costs and outcomes significantly vary depending on the provider. Conditions include knee replacement, diabetes, asthma, hip surgery, heart failure, perinatal care, depression, spine surgery and weight loss surgery. The HVHC plans to tackle additional conditions and challenges in the coming months and years.
